HEROES

New York: Viking, [1976]. First edition, first impression. Hardcover. Octavo. Black cloths spine, black boards. A presentation copy, inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper, "March 23, 1976 / To Gene & Dorothy / from their friend, / Joe / P.S. Hope you have a splendid / bicentennial." A fine copy with a scarce example of a McGinniss inscription, in a black and red dust jacket designed by Neil Stewart.

The author's second book. A search for the vanished American hero and the causes of his demise takes the form of an autobiographical commentary on the hero's traits and attractions, and on contemporary celebrities who might have achieved hero status. Along the way, McGinniss tracks the personal narcissism that formed the demise of his first marriage. His first published book, The Selling of the President 1968, concerned the repackaging of Richard Nixon from a sore loser in his presidential run in 1960, and as governor of California in 1962, into a viable candidate. Fine / Near fine. Item #900
