First edition, first impression. Townsend Warner’s second short-fiction collection, comprising fifteen stories and novellas. The title novella serves as an atmospheric addition to her celebrated 1927 novel Mr. Fortune's Maggot, following eponymic Timothy Fortune as he wanders through the Argentine pampas and finds sanctuary at "The House of the Salutation." Townsend Warner privately regarded the piece as "the purest, the least time-serving story I ever wrote." Also includes the tragic novella Elinor Barley alongside several supernatural tales previously published only in limited private press editions.
