Seventeen issues in sixteen original perfect bound volumes in publisher's illustrated card wrappers (Issues 11/12 published as a double issue in 1985). A complete run of this seminal feminist and lesbian literary journal. Minor foxing to top edge on volumes four and five, volume one has a faint mark on front cover, as does volume eight at the bottom foretip (perhaps a drop of coffee) which is evident through to page 12, but overall, an exceptionally well-preserved, clean, and near fine set without ownership inscriptions or annotations in the text nor its spines distressed.
Conditions was a landmark publication founded to showcase women's writing with a dedicated emphasis on lesbian experience, explicitly prioritizing work by working-class women and women of color. Edited by Elly Bulkin, Jan Clausen, Irena Klepfisz, Rima Shore, Cherríe Moraga, Barbara Smith, Gloria Anzaldúa, et al. Issue 5 (1979) represents a historic milestone in American publishing as the "Black Women’s Issue," co-edited by Barbara Smith and Lorraine Bethel, which later formed the blueprint for the groundbreaking anthology Home Girls. Across its 13-year run, the magazine published foundational poetry, fiction, essays, and reviews by Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Joy Harjo, Chrystos, Paula Gunn Allen, and Cherríe Moraga, among many others. An institutionally scarce and important complete set documenting the crucial intersection of second wave feminism, Black feminism, and queer literary culture. Near fine.
