First edition. A program for The Living Theatre's December 2, 1951 production of Stein's play at the Cherry Lane Theatre in NYC. The play/opera was originally written in 1938 but unproduced until November 1951 at Beaver College, a small college outside of Philadelphia. It was a hit. Essays "Vanguard and Theatre," by Paul Goodman, "Lines Before the Curtain," by Alfred Kreymborg, and "Note Written on Stone," by Carl Van Vechten precede the playbill. The directors are Julian Beck and Judith Malina, the actors include Donald Marye, Robert King Moody, Remy Charlip, and Constance Mobley, among distinguished others. A photo exhibition by Van Vechten entitled "Gertrude Stein and the Theatre" was presented in the lounge on the second floor of the theatre. Fine. Item #814
