UNIVERSITY OF LONDON ELECTION [caption title].

First edition. H.G. Wells stood as the Labour Party candidate for the University of London constituency in the 1922 and 1923 general elections. The University of London constituency, like other university constituencies at the time, allowed for voting by mail. This meant that the campaign primarily involved communicating with eligible voters, who were teachers and students of the University of London residing both in the UK and globally, through mail. Wells was reportedly surprised at the practicalities of a political campaign conducted via post. He lost out to the Conservative Sir Sydney Russell-Wells (1,427 versus 3,833 votes; the Tudor historian Albert Frederick Pollard came in second place with 2,180 votes.). Item #765
