SIR LESLIE STEPHEN'S MAUSOLEUM BOOK.

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1977. First edition. Maroon cloth, gilt spine. xxxiii,[1],118 pp. Frontispiece portrait, four black & white plates. Preface and Introduction by Alan Bell. List of illustrations, Index. Near fine, occasional light mark in outer margins of the Introduction; fine, unclipped pictorial dust jacket.

First edition. Leslie Stephen compiled a photograph album and wrote an epistolary memoir in 1895, known as the “Mausoleum Book,” essentially to record the death of his first wife, Minny Thackeray, and to mourn the death of his second, Julia Prinsep Duckworth.  The album and the memoir, which Stephen created for the private consumption of his children and stepchildren, provide an exceptional example of late Victorian grief, late nineteenth century sentimentalism, and the particular vanity of Sir Leslie.
