[Original Gelatin Silver Candid Production Still from the film:] TEAHOUSE OF THE AUGUST MOON.

[Np: Sanford H. Roth, Nd, c. 1957]. One large borderless gelatin silver print original candid production set still with the photographer’s ink-stamp credit and pencil note to verso, 13.5 x 10.5 in. (34.25 x 26.5 cm) of Marlon Brando in full makeup as "Sakima," on the set of the film Teahouse of the August Moon, relaxing in a director's chair in water near the shore with a sampan-like fishing boat in the background. Near fine. Uncommon.

An often defended cultural appropriation of the Asian personage by white Hollywood actors, this 1957 production directed by Daniel Mann, starred Brando, Glenn Ford, Eddie Albert, John Forsythe, and the occasional Japanese actor. According to IMDB, "In the months immediately after the end of World War II, the U.S. Army has occupied the island of Okinawa, Japan, and is trying to Westernize the local population. Hapless Captain Fisby (Glenn Ford) wants to do good by creating a social club and schoolhouse, but the villagers would rather have a teahouse, complete with geishas. The situation looks like a standoff, until the wily, philosophical interpreter Sakima (Marlon Brando) offers his services as a go-between." Ahem.
