Two Serious Ladies is the author's first novel, originally published in the US in 1943 this is the first UK edition. It's a novel about two women, Christina Goering and Frieda Copperfield, who, in seeking to escape the constraints of society and their own personalities, pursue unconventional and risky lifestyles. They both abandon their comfortable homes and relationships and embark on journeys of self-discovery and experimentation while challenging the norms and expectations of society and gender roles. Two Serious Ladies is regarded as a queer classic that is considered a Modernist masterpiece that influenced many writers such as Truman Capote (blurb on dust jacket flap states it's his favorite book), the poet John Ashbery, and Tennessee Williams.
